Coal prices in China have climbed to record highs amid supply issues and a nationwide power crunch last month. But in Henan province, on the outskirts of Pingdingshan, an old, struggling mining town has missed out on this sudden coal boom. A centre of coal mining for more than 100 years, Pingdingshan today is a shadow of its former self, with most mines heavily depleted and with only low-quality coal left behind.
