Number of marriages drops in China as more young people say no

High costs and changes to the perception of matrimony among young people have led to a decline in the number of marriages in China. Only 8.1 million couples registered to get married in 2020 – a 39% drop from the peak in 2013, according to China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs. Millennials are reportedly putting off marriage by choice as they are more willing to wait for the right person to come along. There is also the perceived freedom that comes with being single.
