Mass circumcisions resumed in the Philippines after “circumcision season” was cancelled last year by the coronavirus pandemic. Seen as a rite of passage in the Philippines, hundreds of boys undergo the procedure daily to remove the foreskin. It’s also regularly practised in Muslim and Jewish populations, but around 90 per cent of Filipino males are circumcised for non-religious reasons, according to the World Health Organization. But as the practice has come under greater scrutiny worldwide, there is still strong social pressure for boys to undergo the procedure in the Philippines.
