Malaysia faces hung parliament for the first time in history after a general election on November 19, 2022, concluded with no coalition managing to win a majority of more than 111 seats. After the results, political parties were told to each present the king with the name of a lawmaker they think has the majority support in the lower house of parliament. The ruler has the discretion to name the premier whom he believes commands majority support. The palace said King Al-Sultan Abdullah’s decision on the new government and appointment of the premier will be final, in line with the constitution.
