Lava flow from Cumbre Vieja’s months-long volcanic eruption has reached the Atlantic Ocean, forming new land and coastline. La Palma, part of Spain’s Canary Islands, has added 43 hectares (106 acres) since the eruption began. A stay-at-home order to protect nearby residents from toxic gases was lifted on November 24 after the lava delta cooled, but the island’s airport remains closed.
