The founder of a blockchain has eaten an infamous artwork commonly known as the “duct-taped banana” at an event in Hong Kong. On November 21, 2024, crypto entrepreneur Justin Sun bought the piece Comedian, originally crafted by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, for US$6.2 million at Sotheby’s in New York. The artwork was seen by industry insiders as a creative gesture combining art, culture and cryptocurrency, and the event attracted significant international media attention. Sun held a public event at a glitzy Hong Kong hotel on November 29, 2024, to eat the banana in front of a live audience.
