Indonesia, the world’s biggest exporter of thermal coal, has imposed a ban on coal exports. The measure which went into effect on January 1, 2022, was taken after a domestic coal supply shortage sparked fears of power outages. The export ban has increased the global price of coal, and top buyers of Indonesian coal have called for Jakarta to lift the measure which was temporarily eased 10 days after it went into effect. The Indonesian government is set to decide on January 12 whether to keep the ban in place.
