Indonesia has taken in a group of about 120 Rohingya refugees who had been stranded at sea for 28 days aboard a disabled boat. The refugees’ plight was discovered on December 26, 2021, when their vessel with a broken engine, taking on water and at risk of capsizing was spotted off the Indonesian coast. Jakarta agreed to accept the group, citing the emergency conditions they experienced, even though Indonesia is not a signatory to the 1951 UN Convention on Refugees. The nation has predominantly been seen as a transit point for those seeking asylum in a third country.
