US Vice-President Kamala Harris arrived in Singapore on August 23, 2021, at the start of her week-long visit to Southeast Asia. Harris met the city state’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on a range of issues including agreements on cybersecurity and climate. The US and Singapore delegations also discussed cooperation against the Covid-19 pandemic and supply chain resilience. Harris reaffirmed a need to uphold the international order and freedom of navigation in the region, including in the disputed South China Sea. America’s tumultuous withdrawal from Afghanistan was also on the agenda, with Harris insisting that Washington is now “singularly focused” on evacuations from Kabul. Lee agreed to offer support by allowing the US to use Singapore’s Airbus 330 aerial refuelling tanker.
