TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew faced tough questioning on March 23, 2023, from US lawmakers convinced that the Chinese-owned short-video app should be barred for its connection to the Chinese Communist Party and for publishing content harmful to children’s mental health. Some young Americans, however, expressed doubt that TikTok is any worse than American-owned social media apps when it comes to user-data collection.
