Honduras and mainland China announced on March 26, 2023, the formal establishment of diplomatic relations, hours after the Central American country officially cut ties it had with Taiwan since 1941. Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen described as “regrettable” the Honduran decision to break diplomatic relations with Taipei in favour of Beijing. Honduras was the latest nation from the region to announce the diplomatic shift, following Nicaragua, El Salvador, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica which have all switched diplomatic recognition to Beijing in recent years.
