10.8 million high school graduates across China have taken the country’s notoriously challenging college entrance exam, known as the gaokao. This year, the test has come with extra stress: staying healthy during the coronavirus pandemic. With a recent surge in Covid-19 cases in China’s southern Guangdong province, education authorities required all examinees to monitor their health for 14 days before the assessment. The examination started on June 7, 2021, covering Chinese, mathematics and English, as well as liberal arts or science electives.
