On the last day of the Communist Party’s week-long national congress, the spotlight was momentarily focused on the unexpected departure of former Chinese president Hu Jintao from the stage at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. A reporter from China’s state-run news agency tweeted that Hu had been recuperating from an illness and was feeling unwell during the session. His staff accompanied to a room next to the meeting venue to rest, the reporter said. Hu’s sudden exit was a break from the otherwise scripted event, in which President Xi Jinping was officially reappointed as party secretary for an unprecedented third term.
