China’s Edward Gaming (EDG) team was crowned the 2021 League of Legends world championships winners on November 6, 2021, after a five-game thriller that saw it beating last year’s champion, South Korea’s DWG Kia. The Shanghai-based team is bringing home prize money totalling US$2.225 million. The win comes as Beijing tightened control over video gaming. Players under 18 can now only play between 8-9pm on Fridays, Saturdays and statutory holidays. The new rule has dashed the esport ambitions of many of China’s young gamers.
