As the annual abalone breeding season gets under way in China’s southern Fujian province, farmers in Lianjiang county are hard at the work. They have stepped up efforts to sort and pack abalone seedlings, which are then cultivated at farms out at sea. The region accounts for about a third of the country’s abalone output, shipping more than 53,500 tonnes of the prized seafood last year.
