Brick Slaves | RT Documentary

Slavery still exists around Bangladesh’s brick kilns. The work is hard, monotonous labour that exploits poor people in rural parts of the country. For months on end, brickyard workers toil away, making bricks by hand, just as they did in the 19th century.

Foremen often beat the labourers and treat them as if ‘they were dogs’. Brickyard staff live in barracks and aren’t allowed to leave before the dry season ends. It’s a tough job that generates huge amounts of harmful red dust, which ruins the workers’ lungs. Men, women and children of all ages work in many brickyards.

With its 160 million population, Bangladesh is undergoing a rapid urbanisation programme, causing a boom in construction, which in turn means that cheap building materials are in high demand. This is a rare glimpse inside Bangladesi brick production. Workers reveal how it feels to be a virtual slave in 2021.
