The US Navy has released the first photos of its teams recovering debris from a Chinese balloon that was shot down off the US east coast on February 7, 2023. As Washington continued the retrieval operations, Beijing said the unmanned airship “does not belong to the US” and reiterated the military response to its flight over North America was an “overreaction”. The US maintains the balloon was a surveillance tool, but China says it was a civilian-owned weather monitoring device that blew off course.
